Sarah's Helping Hands, LLC was born December 2005

Sarah's Helping Hands LLC began in remembrance of owner, Sarah Nelson's, mother Geraldine Lois Traylor.

My beautiful mother had vascular dementia (Alzheimer's). I moved her from her home in Kentucky to live with me in Iowa since she was living alone and family members living around her did not want to help. My mother lived with me until passing away two years later. Upon arriving for a visit just before she moved in, the sight of how poor of condition my mother and her home were in as she came to the door is a painful memory that I will never forget.

During the time that mother lived in our home in Underwood she improved every day. She was happy; all of her wants were fulfilled because I wanted her to have everything she desired since she had worked so hard her whole life. She had always been there for her family and grandchildren- then was treated so badly by all of them! My mother always said, "What goes around comes around."

I understand the pain of having to leave a home you have lived in for most of your life and the memories in that home. After mom's health got better she wanted to go home but couldn't. I remember seeing her cry and say that all of her memories were in that home. It was devastating to see the pain my mom endured as she mourned the loss of her house, selling it and losing her life in Kentucky.

My mom became the "Queen Bee" of our home. Mom loved watching "The Bachelor" and would say if the girls were pretty or ugly and what she thought about the bachelor! She loved the Louisville, KY basketball team and watching the news. Mom loved to shop, so we went shopping on the weekends, we ate out, we went around to look at everyone's Christmas lights -- whatever she wanted to do. She worked at my daughter's salon for a year. Once again, she had purpose in her life and enjoyed working with her granddaughter Julia. My mom got to see Julia get married and even got to ride in the limousine with her, her husband, and the bridal party as they all loved my mom and wanted it to be special for her.

As the seasons change, so did my mom's health.

I took care of my mother and continued to work at University of Nebraska Medical Center until taking a family medical leave of absence until her passing in April 2005 at our home. It was a very devastating time for me.

During my time off, I made a commitment to quit my job at UNMC and start a business in my mother's remembrance so that all who needed my assistance would be treated with the same care, respect, and love as well as have the opportunity to stay in their homes and be independent as long as possible. I only hire staff with compassion for helping others to properly care for my clients.

Please, do not hesitate to call if you or a loved one is in need of care, even caregivers need a helping hand.
